British woman facing lashes in Iran

From The Times yesterday:

A British national has begged forgiveness from an Iranian revolutionary court after being put on trial in Tehran for subversive activities, Iranian websites reported yesterday. An unidentified woman, 24, the daughter of a British mother and Iranian father, has admitted some of the charges against her including encouraging and attending demonstrations, consorting with foreigners and drinking alcohol, government and opposition websites said.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has asked the Iranian Government for clarification of the reports, and that the woman be given consular assistance if true. That is unlikely to be granted, though, because Iran does not recognise dual nationality. Relations between London and Tehran are already under strain. The Iranian regime has accused Britain of fomenting the worst unrest in its 31-year history, arrested Iranians working for the British Embassy and expelled the BBC’s correspondent.

The woman, who was born in Manchester but is believed to teach English in Tehran, is one of sixteen opposition supporters who went on trial late last week for allegedly plotting against the regime and conspiring with Iran’s foreign enemies. The Jaras opposition website said that she had been charged with espionage, undermining state security by encouraging anti-government demonstrations, disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic, insulting its leaders, using a satellite dish and having immoral relations with employees of the German Embassy…

Farahmand Alipour, a Jaras journalist, said that she was likely to be whipped and imprisoned. The regime is handing out draconian penalties in an attempt to deter a demonstration scheduled for the anniversary of the Iranian revolution next Thursday.

The woman admitted attending demonstrations after Mahmoud Ahma- dinejad’s victory in last June’s hotly disputed presidential election. She said she thought that attending the protest was “the right thing to do”. She said that she had drunk alcohol, but only once when forced to do so by her aunt in Britain. She allegedly told the court: “I ask for forgiveness from the Supreme Leader and the respected judge. Since I was arrested, I have learnt a lot and changed a lot and I am full of regret.”

Student stole, got paddled

A female teacher from Mississippi posted on a teaching forum on 3 February:

This morning I followed the usual routine of taking my students to the rest room shortly after breakfast. Well one bus was late and the students from that bus went to put their things in the room.

While in the room, one student decided to go in my purse, take out my wallet, and remove all of my cash. Another stole tattled on her and she quickly confessed. Then to top it off, the principal only paddled her. No other actions were taken simply because her mom is really good friends with the principal.

I have already emailed the superintendent. I am very upset…

Fake degrees for spanking

From BBC News yesterday:

A university registrar who offered forged degrees to two women in return for spanking sessions has been given a suspended jail sentence.

Bristol Crown Court heard that Karl Woodgett filmed himself caning the women at a Bristol hotel. The 37-year-old, of Ewell Minnis, Kent, worked at the University of Bath at the time of the offences. He was given a nine-month sentence suspended for a year after admitting conspiracy to make fake degrees. Woodgett was also ordered to undertake 200 hours of community service.

The court heard that Woodgett, who originally lived in Frome, Somerset, had at first paid Cameroonians Elsie Neh and Mbone Kemba to be spanked under the pretence that he was conducting a “pain management” study. He later offered fake university qualifications in return. The scam was uncovered by a UK Border Agency investigation. Woodgett also pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of articles for use in fraud.

Saudi woman facing lashings for false complaints

From the Saudi Gazette last week:

A court in Ras sentenced a Saudi woman Wednesday to one-and-a half years in prison and 300 lashes of the whip for filing false complaints against government officials and further threatened to “strip her of her Saudi nationality” if she repeated the offence. The woman was also charged with making visits to government offices over a case against her husband without the company of a legal male guardian.

The woman, who intends to appeal the ruling, has received an official copy of the verdict’s details and now has ten days to appeal. If upheld, the ruling will not be subject to pardon – according to the court – and the lashes will be administered at intervals during her prison term.
